Content Outline

This blog will outline my second project.

Opening:
  • Open with emotional appeal referencing animals
  • Introduce topic with sound effects
3 Body Sections:

1. Graduate students do not have many if any major publications. They mostly are working towards being able to publish their work.

"one of the classes you have to take as a graduate student is called seminar and its to prepare you for [your defense." - Kylie Smith

"to finish your undergraduate degree you have to do something called a defense... [It] is a meeting where you defend your thesis and prove that you can do research and do it well while also telling people in a way that matters." - Kylie Smith

These quotes from Kylie Smith, a graduate student at the U of A, prove that it is hard work to be noticed by the outside world from a graduate student that is still trying to make a name for themself. This is important information for me and what my future college career will consist of.

2. Veterinarians and DVMs usually do not operate on social media professionally.

"We have policies that restrict our discussion of work activities on social media to keep ourselves and scientist safe from animal rights extremist" - Dr. Cynthia Doane

"The current extremist tactic, of targeting organisations involved in animal research by attacking the individuals that work for them or the companies that supply them"

This evidence proves the controversy surrounding some topics regarding animal rights and the people involved in them. They are important because this explains why in my previous project and current one, I have not been able to find much if anything on social media regarding veterinary science.

3. Both students and professionals frequently use informal means of communication.

In my interview with Kylie Smith, she spoke of how she has a close bond and even some classes with her colleagues. To get in contact with them she either emails or texts because she has most of their personal phone numbers.

"Email and phone.  But mostly email since we are all busy.  Within our staff – email, text, videoconferencing, face-to-face meetings." - Dr. Cynthia Doane

This proves that a lot of people in the science community are connected in some way, whether it be personally working with them or knowing mutual people. This is important because as an undergraduate, I need to begin to network and find useful people to be able to accomplish my dreams.

Closing:

All of these points are important because they give a rough introduction to science majors and future veterinarians / animal caretakers.

  1. I'm curious about your approach to organization here. I love the insights into grad students' writing lives. Is the "graduate thesis" going to be one of your genres?

I think the next steps in development (to riff off the flow chart on the board) are clarifying the 2 genres you'll focus on and then picking some examples for each.... Let me know if I can be of service here.
